It was January 29th, 2012. I was driving to Cape May to drop offf school books that my best friend left at my house. She and I had met only a week or two prior, and when we met, she said we'd have awesome adventures together. That dark night, as I was driving, I saw my first ever shooting star. It filled me with excitement and awe that I had gotten to see such a beautiful thing. It made me realize how mundane my life was, with me being 25 years old (at the time) and never seeing a shooting star. It was that moment, that I decided to change things in my life for the better. That single moment of excitement is what put me on the path of breaking out of my comfort zone, grabbing the bull by the horns, and taking control. It's my life. It can be whatever I make it out to be. Right now, I want it to be filled with excitement and adventure. I'm gonna make sure that happens.

The life lesson I learned that night was: If you don't poke your head out from under the sand and take some deep breaths, the world will pass you by.

Hello there. My name is Shawn. I'm a 26 year old software developer from Lindenwold, New Jersey. I've gone through some pretty wild changes within myself in the last year. I've decided to hike as a form of 'walkabout' to figure out some things about myself, and resolve some inner conflicts. I've started this blog to document my trips, and share with the world of what nature is like from the eyes of a deaf person. I will be writing short stories and taking many pictures for my book. Many of my posts will be excerpts from the book, so feel free to check back often.

About

My name is Shawn, I'm 26 years old and live in New Jersey. I'm also deaf, and I started this blog to document my travels and my growth as a person. My eyes were closed for so long that I forgot to open them every now and then. They're finally open, and I can't get enough.
